Questions and answers related to Elluminate Live!
What is Elluminate Live?
Elluminate Live! is a web conferencing and collaboration system, enabling users to interact with each other through various multimedia tools that foster a rich environment of communication and knowledge sharing.
Why do I need a web conferencing system like Elluminate Live!?
While elearning has taken great strides because of learning management systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard or Desire2Learn (d2l), many elearning practioners find that having a synchronous (real-time, live) platform is an equally important part of the elearning process. Elluminate Live! is a leading example of such a platform. By using Elluminate Live!, moderators or instructors are able to communicate with participants or learners in a real-time setting, so that the dynamic and interactive elements of the learning process can be maintained.
What advantages does Elluminate Live! have over Adobe Connect, and open source programs like DimDim and ePresence?
While all of the above programs do a fine job as far as making presentations is concerned, only Elluminate Live! features tools that allow moderators to manage media, control individual rights and permissions, and provide ”breakout” rooms for small-group discussions. If you simply want a tool that enables visual presentations, almost any web conferencing tool will do. But if you want to collaborate, manage individual permissions, and carry out a truly interactive session, only Elluminate Live! can fit what you’re looking for.
What application do I need to run Elluminate Live!?
You need the JavaTM application, which is available as a free download at Java’s website, which is www.java.com. If you are a Mac user, you will not need to download Java, for it is custom-featured in all Macs when they are purchased.

Are microphones and headsets needed for Elluminate Live!? If so, what makes/models are acceptable?
To use the Audio tool in Elluminate Live!, your computer must have a working microphone and speakers, or a headset. As long as these devices are made for computer use, they should pose little if any difficulty. However, you are advised not to buy PC-related devices for a Mac, and vice-versa. Furthermore, if you are using a PC, it is recommended that you opt for a purchase of a headset with a USB port, because this is a lot less fragile, and more sturdy, than a “two-plugged” headset that plugs into two sockets.
Are web cameras needed for Elluminate Live!? If so, what makes/models are acceptable?
Web cameras are needed if you want to use the Video (a.k.a. webcam) tool in Elluminate Live. Elluminate Live! supports 24 Bit RGB Colour, compressed video format, Direct X video support and high end cameras such as FireWire Sony Camcorders.
