Coming Soon!
OLe Moodle DL
Manager
Hey Moodle users...are you looking for a way to
simplify student management and recordkeeping chores? In partnership
with the BC Learning Network, Odyssey is developing an add-on that will
enable administrators and instructors to add profile information and
generate reports not currently available in Moodle. This enhancement
will be particularly useful for tracking distributed learning students
who are taking a variety of courses from multiple sites. Profile
information is created or updated simultaneously in the management
system and in Moodle. Students can self-enroll online after verification
through an approval mechanism. Report cards are available at any time
for viewing/printing by students. Special parental access enables
parents to access report cards without requesting them from the teacher.
The OLe DL Manager will be available in time for the 2008-2009 school
year.
Moodle - Elluminate
Live!
Bridge
And more coming soon for Moodle sites: Elluminate
recently announced the Elluminate Bridge for Moodle integration applet
enabling instructors to create Elluminate sessions on the fly as
activities in their courses. While this has been available for some time
to Moodle users with a local server installation of Elluminate, it is
now available for sites accessing Elluminate-hosted sessions such as
those available through the BC provincial licensing agreement. Odyssey
is currently fine tuning the details for BC sites. More information is
available from
Elluminate.

Shelley
Cridland
Product Manager |
Shelley has worked for Odyssey for the past 8 years, most recently as
Product Manager, a role that includes support for marketing as well as
product development. At the end of April she will be taking a leave of
absence to travel a second time to Ethiopia where she and husband Bill
will meet their new daughters. Miheret, 4 years old, and Mitike, 8
months old, are new sisters for Mekonnen, 8 years old, and Tenaye, 3
years old.
Shelley will be a super busy mom, but she will still be working behind
the scenes keeping the Odyssey website updated, organizing newsletters,
and designing more great concept graphics like the Pot of Nail soup you
see elsewhere in this newsletter. We wish the entire Cridland family all
the best as a new family of 6.
Customer Connect
We want to remind you that all support for Nautikos 2.9 will end June
30. The deadline has now passed for converting 2.9 databases running on
Sybase to NautikosConnect running on MySQL. If you missed the deadline,
but would still like to have your database converted, please contact us
immediately. Local server customers considering moving their databases
to be hosted by Odyssey should also contact us as soon as possible.
Tip
By default, Nautikos displays 5 learner or path names in the
enrollment management screens. Many instructors prefer to view 8 or
10 or more. To change the number displayed:
-
Login as Administrator
-
Select Manage Staff Users from the Main Menu
-
Select the Instructor or Web Instructor from the drop down list
-
Change the setting for Number of Learners on Screen and/or
Number of Paths on Screen to the number desired
-
Click Update to save the change

The Budget Crunch: How to Do More with Less
We
all want to be all things to all people, meeting our students' needs,
but keeping administrators happy by not overspending. eHighSchoolCourses
(EHSC) can help.
EHSC is a NautikosConnect database that
contains the courses you require without having to purchase them for
installation in your site database. Typical Nautikos courses cost
$500-650. This is a huge chunk of change to spend if you only have one
or two students needing a particular course. Instead, you can register
as an instructor in EHSC and take advantage of the
wide array of courses
available for an unlimited number of students. Instructor registration
costs only $200 per school year, and each course seat purchased is an
additional $95.
Let's say you have two students who need Social Studies 11. One of
these students also needs Principles of Math 12. Another student wants
to take Writing 12. To purchase each of these courses for your database
would cost $2300. Through EHSC, you pay only $580...$200 for an
instructor plus 4 * $95 for each course seat.
As an EHSC instructor, you monitor the
learners' progress, mark assignments and tests, and generate reports.
New to Nautikos? EHSC instructor fees include access to a series of
brief self-directed training lessons with the option to meet with a
trainer in Elluminate Live! if desired. Support is available at
any time.

New Feature in Nautikos:
Embedded Response Assessment Items
Odyssey is pleased to announce a new NautikosConnect test question type:
embedded response (also known as cloze). Embedded response test
questions include multiple choice, fill-in-the blank,
and numeric responses.
- These question types can be combined in a single assessment
item.
- Assessment items with multiple embedded responses can have
different weights assigned to different components of the question.
- Answer criteria can include responses that earn partial credit.
Multiple choice options are presented as a drop down selection list that
can be embedded in the text of a paragraph that looks like this to the
learner:

A simple fill-in-the blank
question looks like this:
 |
Numeric questions accept a specific value or values within a
range:

|
 |
Course developers select Cloze from the list of question
types when adding a new assessment item and enter the question
text in the HTML editor using the specific syntax required:: |

For more information, or to request course development documentation
on this type of assessment, contact support@odysseylearn.com.
